Face Lift (Ritidoplasty)

Face Lift and Mini Face Lift

The Face Lift or Rhytidectomy is recommended when there is a greater amount of skin to be removed and when the neck area needs to be treated. A Face Lift or Rhytidectomy also treats the "double chin" and nasolabial folds, also treating the muscle of the area.

A mini Face Lift is best when there is a more discrete skin laxity and there is no need to treat the neck area. In a Mini Lift, it is also possible to treat the forehead area, lifting the upper eyelids. Wrinkles between the eyelids and crow's feet can also be treated.

Miectomy: crow's feet permanent Botox

In case of the "crow's feet", a procedure known as Myectomy (or Myotomy) is usually performed. This facial rejuventation procedure works by removing a small piece of the muscle from the area, paralyzing a specific segment responsible for causing the crow's feet. Once the muscle is paralyzed, there will be no more wrinkles in that specific place.

This facial rejuvenation technique has been compared to Botox because of the same action of paralyzing specific segments responsible for forming wrinkles. The only difference between Botox and the Myectomy is the fact that Botox is temporary. The Myectomy is usually performed together with a fat graft, in order to cover the area where the muscle is removed.

The treatment

For a successful facelift or Rhytidectompy procedure, the skin should not be tensioned. The facial muscles should be treated and replaced, without stretching the skin. The skin will only redrape the area later. This way, wrinkles will be treated in a natural way. It is also important to remember that the treatments should be individualized, according to the needs of each patient.

Scars should be done in the same way. Each patient requires an individual planning about how the scars are going to be hidden. Dr. Hazan´s team usually hides the scars in the front of the ear, rounding the hairline. In the back, the scar will be placed behind the ear, in a discrete location. The extension of the scar depends on the extension of the facelift or Rhytidectompy treatment.

The main difference is that Dr. Hazan´s team does not stretch the skin from the mouth to the ear and from the eyelid to the sideburn. This technique makes the results look artificial, the skin looks stretched. Dr. Hazan´s team works on the skin in another position, against gravity.

The best patient for a face lift surgery or Rhytidectomy surgery is a patient whose face and neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity with a strong and well defined bone structure. Most patients are in their forties to sixties; however face lift surgeries or Rhytidectomy surgery can be done successfully on people in their seventies and eighties as well.

A face lift surgery or Rhytidectomy surgery can make you look younger and fresher, and it may enhance your appearance. If you feel young, the face lift surgery or Rhytidectomy surgery can help make you look as good as you feel.

A Rhytidectomy surgery or Face lift surgery usually takes several hours. The exact placement of the incisions depends mainly on your facial structure and the areas to be worked on. Incisions usually begin above the hairline at the temples, extending in a natural line in front of the ear (or just inside the cartilage at the front of the ear), and continue behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. If the neck needs work, a small incision may also be made under the chin. When combined with a brow lift, a coronal incision will be used. This last incision follows a headphone-like pattern, starting at about the ear level and running across the top of the forehead and down the other side of the head, usually done well behind the hairline so that the scar is not visible.

In general, the skin is separated from the fat and muscle below during the Rhytidectomy surgery or face lift surgery. Fat may be trimmed or suctioned from around the neck and chin to improve the contour. The underlying muscle and membrane is then tightened and the skin is pulled back with the excess removed. Stitches secure the layers of tissue and close the incisions; metal clips may be used on the scalp.

Following the Rhytidectomy surgery or face lift surgery, a small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin behind the ear to drain any blood that might collect there. A bandage wrap is generally used to minimize bruising and swelling after the Rhytidectomy surgery or face lift surgery.
